Escaype Live: Reviews:

People will go to any length to achieve instant fame and fortune, and they use social media as a means of making quick money. There's nothing wrong with it, but it has a darker side that focuses on how these apps work, and it's clear from the beginning of the show that "it's a business of entertainment, and business comes before entertainment." The show follows both app developers, who are purely business-oriented, and content creators, who may struggle to create engaging content that will capture people's attention.

Siddharth Kumar Tewary’s show delves into the lives of several people associated with a video-streaming social media app called Escaype Live. The show follows app users as they push boundaries in the hopes of winning the app's grand prize of three crores. It has a lot of resemblance to the apps like Tik-Tok, Dubsmash, and Instagram reels, where anyone with a phone can become a star. The show revolves around the app developers—the boss, Ravi Gupta (Jaaved Jaaferi), team leader Gia Bose (Waluscha D’ Souza), and content moderator Krishna (Siddharth), as well as the lives of the topmost content creators—sleazy internet sensation Fetish Girl (Plabita Borthakur), prankster Darkie (Sumedh Mudgalkar), parkour Aamcha Spider (Ritvik Sahore), singing sensation Meena Kumari (Rohit Chandel) and Dancing Rani (Aadyaa Sharma).

Each character is brimming with emotions and vulnerabilities, which encourages them to explore the app. Dancing Rani, for example, wants to soon transform into a "big girl" to become an internet sensation after trying her luck in several dance competitions; Fetish Girl aka Hina is living a double life of facing discrimination because she is from the Northeast and hiding her identity on the app to earn some extra grants to support her family and herself; and when it comes to pranks, Darkie knows no bounds aside from his likes and popularity, which should increase with the amount of hearts and diamonds he earns on the app. Then there's Aamcha Spider, a dhobi's (washerman's) son who wants to change his life from “naali ke keede wali zindagi se seedha penthouse wali zindagi” and Rajkumar is a transwoman who hides his true identity because he is afraid of social acceptance and only shows up as Meena Kumari on the app. Despite their diverse backgrounds and environments, they all have one thing in common: they are all doing different things with the same goal of moving forward in life.

Co-written by Jaya Mishra and Siddharth Kumar Tewary, this nine-part series— with each episode lasting about an hour—is both entertaining and fast-paced due to its busy narrative. However, some of the enchantment has worn off due to the fact that the show has too many characters and their reel and real-life stories served one after another for the viewers. Even so, it keeps everyone guessing, from the characters to the viewers, about what will happen next and who will win this competition. Based on the first seven episodes available for review, the climax is expected to be a game-changer. Let us wait and watch!

In terms of acting, Siddharth gives a restrained performance as Krishna. He is the only one who is concerned about making things right, both professionally and personally. But his character arc is not well developed. Sumedh Mudgalkar plays Darkie as cunning and unpredictable, and he shines in every scene—whether it's a live recording or he's brutally beating the sh*t out of someone. He is difficult to watch on-screen. Aadyaa Sharma steals the show and emerges as the most entertaining content creator among others. Whether it’s an item number or a Rajasthani folk dance, her moves will capture your attention.

Plabita Borthakur (who was last seen in Sutliyan) steals the show as a fetish girl, greeting her fans as “Hellooo Boysss." She makes you sympathise with her character, whether she is molested or discriminated against. Swastika Mukherjee as Hina’s boss Mala plays her part convincingly. Ritvik Sahore's role as Parkour differs greatly from his previous roles in Campus Diaries and Indoori Ishq. He appears to be an ideal candidate for this type of role. Rohit Chandel is impressive as both Meena Kumari and Rajkumar. His discomfort in dealing with social norms on a daily basis is convincingly conveyed. Sunaina is introduced late in the story, but Shweta Tripathi Sharma portrays her flawlessly. Her encouragement and empowerment of Rajkumar to come out of the closet and accept himself is admirable. Jaaved Jaaferi as CEO of Escaype live and Waluscha D'Souza as the boss lady has a limited role but make their presence felt.
